The Heart of God

DEVOTION
PROVERBS
THE HEART OF GOD

Prov 23:15-16
15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; 16 my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
NIV

Although we would think this is Solomon speaking to his son Rehoboam, who succeeded him to the throne after Solomon’s death, it also can be taken as God speaking to us. If our heart is wise, then the heart of God will be glad. His inmost being will rejoice when our lips speak what is right. Is that not a joy to know that the inmost being of God is glad because of us? Should we not desire to bring joy to God, to have him rejoice because we are speaking words that are right? If we just think about the fruit of his Spirit and consider the words that should flow from our lips as a result of his fruit bearing in our lives. We should be speaking words of love, words of peace, words of joy, words of patience, words of kindness, words of gentleness and goodness. We should be speaking words of faithfulness and of self-control. God rejoices when we speak his gospel to those who are in need of hearing it. God’s heart is glad when our heart is filled with his wisdom which we only get through his word, both written and that which is whispered to our heart by the Spirit. What an overwhelming thought to know God is rejoicing over us. He knows our inmost being, he knows our thoughts, and he also wants us to know his inmost being, and to know his heart. What intimacy God desires with us. To be one with him just as Jesus prayed.

John 17:20-23
20 "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one : 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
NIV

To be one with God, to be so absolutely united with him brings him so much gladness and joy. Let us bring glory to our God, as he has given us his glory. Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. We are in the heart of God.
