Nothing but the Truth

DEVOTION
PROVERBS
NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH

Prov 21:6
6 A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare.
NIV

There is a difference as to how this is translated because several of Hebrew copies have a little difference. Some of the copies read that a fortune made by a lying tongue is a vapor for those who seek death. This is how the interlinear has it also. Either way the idea is pretty much the same thing. People that are not seeking life are seeking death. Jesus is the life and if one is not looking for Jesus they are, even by default looking for death. A person who has found Jesus will not make a fortune by lying. This does not necessarily say that every person who is not interested in finding Jesus is a big fat liar. However, this is saying that those who have a lying tongue to make there fortune are not followers of Jesus. It is totally inappropriate to lie in order to profit in any way, whether that be monetarily or socially. However it would appear this is about those who seek death are more apt to lie in order to profit. It would also appear we who are seeking life will not use a lying tongue for any reason. It does put a spin on life in general as to the two types of people, those seeking life and those seeking death. This is not to say everyone who lies seeks death, but they are in the sense if they are refusing Christ. That is the choice each person must make, life or death. Jesus said that he was the truth, the life and the way.

John 14:6
6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life . No one comes to the Father except through me.
NIV

Jesus also said that he was the resurrection.

John 11:25-26
25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life . He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
NIV

If we want to live forever which is the life, and if we want to experience the resurrection we must follow Jesus and he is the truth which is the exact opposite of a lying tongue which then is following the course of death. This is both the death of the body and of eternal death without the resurrection into the eternal peace of God. Let us always be about the truth, about Jesus.
