I will teach

DEVOTION

I WILL TEACH

Ex 4:10-12
10 Moses said to the LORD, "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue." 11 The LORD said to him, "Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."
NIV

Moses said to Yahweh, “O Adonay”. As far as we can see this is the first this word is used. It is the Hebrew or Jewish name assigned to God, a name of respect and reverence. This is at least the first time Moses actually addressed God by name in this conversation at the burning bush. Again, he comes up with an excuse as to why he should not be the one to go. He tells the LORD that he has never been very eloquent in speak all of his life. He also includes the fact he has not changed even though he is speaking to God. He is simply slow of speech and tongue. Moses does not think on his feet. He has to contemplate before he speaks so he doesn’t say something the wrong way. But God has an answer for him, of course. He asks him “who is the one who gave him his mouth?” But is also includes that he has to power to take away Moses ability to speak and hear and see.  He could make him deaf, mute and blind. So then no more excuses. He tell him he has all that he needs to do the job, his mouth, his ears and his eyes. But he also tells him that he will go with him and help him speak, in fact he will even teach him what to say. What more could Moses need? We are going to see Moses does not think that is enough, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It seems we, the people of God, might have forgotten this lesson. We have replaced God teaching us what to say with years of education from other men. We have developed colleges which are in the business of profit making in order to maintain their business practice selling degrees in doctrinal studies or other ministerial degrees. This is so men can speak for God to others. Yet has God actually given them words to speak? Has God actually taught them what to say? It is God who has given them a mouth, or is it men? This is a lesson we should take to heart, in fact some of us have already known this for some time. We do not need a degree offered by men in order to speak for God. We only need God to teach us what to say. He has given us not only our mouth, ears and sight, but our mind and heart. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and receive the Spirit into our being, we have God within giving us revelation into all truth. This is the Spirit of God, leading us, teaching us, given us truth, ideas, words that have real meaning. We simply need to listen to God.
