Worthy

DEVOTION
THE REVELATION
WORTHY

Rev 5:1-5
5:1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?" 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."
NIV

There is no more truth then what is said here. No one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. Where in all the creation of God could we ever find anyone worthy enough? But let us not weep for there is one, he is the creator himself, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. We know that everything that was made was made by him. Only he is worthy to open this scroll. This should tell us something about ourselves. If we ever think for one moment that we contain any worthiness of our own, we are so miserably mistaken. The only worth we have is that which God considers we have. He considers us to have great worth, so much he died for us to satisfy he own need for justice. But we are not even worthy of that. There is a difference between having worth to God and being worthy. We are not worthy of his blessings. We are not worthy of his grace and mercy. We are not worthy of his healing touch. We are not worthy of his salvation. There is nothing we are worthy of, nothing at all. But we do have worth to God. What we see here is that we should be the ones weeping, weeping tears of joy because Jesus is the only one who is worthy. What he is worthy to do here is to expose the entire future of all mankind by opening the scroll and its seven seals. Once again we should be weeping tears of joy, for we know the outcome of our lives. But we also should be weeping tears of sorrow for there are people whose fate is not as blessed as ours, unless of course they come to Christ, repenting of their sinful condition, accepting him as their Savior. Sometimes we might think more of ourselves then we ought to. It is dangerous for us to even consider we even have any goodness of our own much less any worthiness. Yet once again we can rejoice, we can be glad, we can be overjoyed, we can be content, and we can be at peace in our hearts and with God. We can live with confidence, with assurance, with joyfulness because he is worthy.
