DEVOTION
THE GOSPEL
OF JOHN
THE WAY
John 14:5-7
5 Thomas
said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know
the way?" 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and
the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you
really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him
and have seen him."
NIV
Although
Jesus had told them they knew the way, Thomas was still a bit confused about
where Jesus was going, and therefore how would he know the way to go. It is
clear, especially from the response of Jesus, the he is the way and the truth
and the life, of course we all know this and therefore we are not a bit
confused like Thomas was. But maybe some of us are confused as we might put a
lot of stock in our good deeds, or in our ability to check off all things we
don’t do instead of Jesus. Of sure we know our salvation comes from Jesus, but
then we start adding other things to Jesus, like our good deeds, or our check
list. Yes, we should live a good a life as we can. Yes, we should abstain from
behaviors, attitudes and thoughts that are displeasing to God, but who among us
has accomplished that to perfection. We are but a sinner saved by grace and
that is all we will ever be. Although we should not make a provision for our
flesh, that is make an excuse that we are only human and therefore we will keep
sinning and there is nothing we can do about. However we are human and we never
will attain perfection, as if we did, we would not need Jesus. He is the way;
he is the only way we will ever be able to go where he is. Where would we be
without Jesus? Where would we go if we did not have Jesus? We would not even
know where to go if we not have Jesus to show us the way, in fact, we would be
lost. What other way would we go? We have no other way. There is no other way.
