Pay Attention

DEVOTION 2 PETER PAY ATTENTION 2 Peter 1:19-21 19 And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. NIV Besides the eye witness testimony of Peter we also have the word of the prophets made more certain. If someone spoke about an event that was going to happen years before it was to happen today it would be in the tabloids at the checkout counter, but this is would be of human invention or perhaps of demonic influence to distract from the real prophets of old. Here we see Peter as inspired by God giving credence to the word spoken by those men who lived hundreds of year ago and spoke of the Christ, and what he would have to endure and how the people of Israel would respond to hi message. This is addition proof God is real, Christ is real, and it is all true. We also would do well to pay attention to it, being focused on the truth in the same way a person would focus on a beam of light in the absolute absence of all other forms of light. We cannot be distracted by false lights that lead down wrong paths, but must be focused on the true light, Christ. He said he was the way, truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me. But he also said He was the light of the world. Those prophets did not invent their words on their own, but were inspired by the Holy Spirit to tell a story that was to happen. God was warning his people to pay attention, something wonderful was going to happen, their redemption was drawing near. We have that same warning all throughout scriptures, we do not need only to pay attention to the eye witness accounts of Jesus, but we can see him in the words of the prophets as well. More proof of the existence of God, and of Jesus Christ, and of God’s plan for man. We cannot simply accept Christ and then slide through life going our merry way, doing our thing, just being a Christian. We must pay attention, be focused on the light, examining all the proof, living accordingly, recognizing we are part of a body, each with a task, each with a purpose, each with a role to play in order that we all in concert, united in spirit, can benefit the Kingdom of God. We need to pay attention.
