DEVOTION
THE ACTS OF THE
APOSTLES
BLESSED COMPLETELY
Acts 3:24-26
24 "Indeed, all the
prophets from Samuel on, as many as have spoken, have foretold these days. 25
And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your
fathers. He said to Abraham, 'Through your offspring all peoples on earth will
be blessed.' 26 When God raised up his
servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your
wicked ways."
NIV
Although in the genetic sense
we are not heirs of Abraham, as the Jews are, however, because we have been
adopted into the family of God through faith in Jesus Christ, we are in one
sense an heir of Abraham. When we consider what the most important aspect of
Abraham was is that he believed God and his belief was counted to him as
righteousness. This is our story because we believe in Jesus, it is through
our faith in Jesus that we are counted as righteous, for He is our
righteousness. Again, we can also be counted as being among the blessed because
we are some of all the peoples on the earth. It is interesting the Greek word used,
in the context of all peoples on earth will be blessed, has the meaning of, to
confer a benefit. Because we have all the fulfillment of this promise to
Abraham in the person of Jesus Christ, we can see that Jesus is the offspring
spoken about and Jesus is the greatest benefit who could be conferred upon us. There
is no other benefit that would or could give us, first, the forgiveness of our
sins, and second, eternal life. In addition, we have all that Jesus brings into
our lives through all his teachings, and by sending us the Holy Spirit to lead
us into all the truth that is contained in the word of God. Secondly, there
is another Greek word that is translated as bless, in this context of, Jesus
will bless us by turning each of us from our wicked ways. This Greek word
carries the meaning of giving a benediction upon, or speaking well of, or to
prosper, which would be in the sense of a spiritual prospering, rather than a
material one. In other words, because we are in Christ we are completely
blessed in every possible way.
