THE ACTS OF THE
APOSTLES
COME LORD JESUS
Acts 1:9-11
9 After he said this, he was
taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They
were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men
dressed in white stood beside them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said,
"why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been
taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go
into heaven."
NIV
If there was ever any chance
of having any doubt whatsoever about Jesus being the divine creator of all
things, this testimony by Luke puts it to rest. First, we know that He came to
earth through the power of the Holy Spirit using a virgin girl. Then we have
all the miracles he did in those three-plus years of his public ministry. This was
followed by his crucifixion, burial, and then the most excellent resurrection which
conquered death. Then we are given the fact that in this physical form He spent
the last forty days showing himself to many people, including just showing up
in a locked room to prove himself to Thomas. Now, Luke tells us that Jesus begins
to rise into the air, just floating upward, being drawn up toward heaven until
he disappears within the clouds, or as Luke says a cloud hid them from their sight.
Nevertheless, Jesus came, and now he leaves to go back from where he came. The beauty
of all this is that Emmanuel, God came to live among us, to show us the way, to
redeem us, to save us, and bring us back to the eternal life he intended us to
have from the very beginning. We can also be assured that he has not left us
nor forsaken us either. He is coming back for us. He will appear in the sky,
from within the clouds it would seem. However, he could come back on a bright
sunny, cloudless day, or in the middle of the night, for the earth is not the
same everywhere, and when Jesus appears every eye will see as we are told by John
in the revelation that was given to him.
Rev 1:7-8
7 Look, he is coming with the
clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the
peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. 8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,
"who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
NIV
There is no doubt whatsoever
and we wait for the day with great anticipation. Still, we occupy until he
comes for us. We do not sit, doing nothing just staring into the sky waiting
for him, but we live and breathe and have our being in him, doing that which he
has called us to do. We will not be among those who mourn when he comes in with
the clouds, we will rejoice for our redemption will be complete and we will
raise to meet him in the air to be with him forevermore. Hallelujah, praise His
Holy Name. Come, Lord Jesus, we await your return. All this stuff of the world
will either rust, rot, or be burned up, but we will live on for eternity with our
Lord. Come, Lord Jesus.
