THE GOSPEL
ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
BEING ONE
Matt 19:3-6
3 Some Pharisees came to him
to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for
any and every reason?" 4 "Haven't you
read," he replied, "that at the
beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' 5 and said, 'For this reason a man will
leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become
one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined
together, let man not separate."
NIV
There is going to be more
discussion regarding this marriage and divorce situation, but for now, let us
simply take the word as what it says. God made us male and female and that is
all he made. He made a man, and he took a rib from that man to make a woman. When
God first made that man, he took dirt or the dust of the ground forming man in His
own image. It is as if God got down on his hands and knees and formed man, perhaps spitting on the dust to make a clay-like substance to form man, and then it is as
if God bent over and breathed his very breath into the nostrils of man,
bringing life into that form. What an amazing thought that we have the very
breathe of God in us. Then he caused this man to fall into a sleep and took a
rib from him to form a woman, a suitable helpmate. It is again, incredible to
see the providence and will of God. He did not take bone from the head of man
putting the woman in charge of man, nor did God take a bone from the man’s foot,
making woman subject to man, to be at his feet. However, God took a rib from
the side of the man with the intent that woman should walk through life at the side
of man, as an equal in the sight of mankind and God. Nevertheless, because woman
came from man and man comes from woman, being born in the flesh as Jesus was born
of Mary, God still sees this man and woman that he created male and female as
one being. God sees man and woman joined together as one for both were created
from one. Without getting into this heretical culture, we live in today, there are
simply two beings, a man and a female. We are born one or the other and are
intended to find each other to become one through the bond of marriage. Jesus
does make some differences as we will get to when he speaks of those who live a
solitary life, for several reasons, but those are of the will of men it would
seem, for it is by the will of God that the two shall become one, that God intended
from the beginning that male and female should be mates, that it is not the will
of God that either male or female should live a solitary life. If that were the
case Adam would have never known Eve in the biblical sense and no sons or
daughters would have been born to them and they would not fulfill His command to
multiply and fill the earth. Therefore, there can be no separation of what God
has joined together. Certainly, that can be marriages that are of the will of
man, or mankind, and are not blessed by God and end in separation, again by the
will of man. The point is that a marriage should be due to the will of God,
for He created the suitable helpmate for Adam. Therefore, as we are joined by
God, we are one and should remain one.
