Light Overpowers Darkness

DEVOTION
THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
LIGHT OVERPOWERS DARKNESS
John 1:1-5
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
NIV

Having determined to have faith in the Word, we can now see all things made. Well almost all things made. There is much of creation that is not visual to the naked eye. Man has discovered methods or rather devices that enable us to see far beyond that which the naked eye can see. We have large telescopes to peer into the universe, even one that orbits the earth. We have large electronic microscopes to peer into that which is so small we never knew of its existence before. However, the visible world in which we live and can see has so many wonders that stir our imagination as to how they all came to be. The Lord inspired his Apostle John, the one called the beloved disciple, to settle the cause of our imagination. We do not have to imagine how everything came to be, for God made them all simply with the Word. Because Jesus is God, and again we reference the trinity or triune God, Jesus created everything that is created. It does amaze us that some people, who are the same people who refuse to accept Jesus, believe the earth just came into being with all its plants and living creatures just all on its own, or maybe from the big bang. The scientific facts of the earth's exact orbit around the sun with its exact rotation on its precise degree of tilt, only proves nothing was by happenstance, but rather by the super intellectual design of God. Life could not exist without God for he is life, life is in him and that light within him is the light which is within us. Light in the sense is seen as life, that which causes us to be alive. But also the light is also Christ, he is the Light of the World. Jesus is the one who gives life, eternal life, which is the only way a man can have life. Before Jesus came into the world, although Jesus has always been, for nothing was made that was not made by him, the world, or mankind in the world, had cast itself into darkness. We have Adam to blame for that, or Eve and then Adam. Either way, because of their disobedience darkness fell over the earth, it goes by the name sin. However, even before that darkness, there was the light of men. The plan was there for the light to come into the world before the darkness. There are many who still live in the darkness and they cannot understand the light and without the light, they have no life. We are so thankful, for whatever reason the light broke through our darkness and we were able to cross over from that city of sin and darkness into the city of light and life. However, there is another sense in which this must be seen and it proves why we were able to see that light. The Greek word translated understood, means to take hold of, as to make one’s own, so seize. So although the darkness, sin, overshadows the world, it cannot take hold over the light. The darkness cannot overpower the light. The light will always overpower the darkness. Jesus has overpowered sin. Jesus has overpowered the sin in us and we have life.
